Is the VR6 reliable: No

Is the regular one reliable: For a German car, yes

Is it fun: From what I heard, hell yes

The engine itself is quite reliable, it is the electronics, I heard a car mechanic say all you have to do is cover the battery so water does not leak in, cause there is a gap between the windshield and hood.

loaned a friend's slammed black VR6 in Denver for a while it was fun to rev the piss out of the wide pen exhaust and play with the automatic spoiler in traffic with appreciative Porsche's and...other Corrados? Just as good in the winter as any other solid VW. The interiors are pretty baller/comfy in leather too.

Once you pass that magic 10-year mark, reliability of ANY car is a bit of a crapshoot. It becomes much more about each particular car – it's specific quirks, how it's been maintained, that kind of thing – than about car makes and models in general. Sure, some fare better than others, but any older car can be unreliable if it's been neglected.

Also, most interesting cars tend to have weaknesses of some sort. Plus, to be honest, I think that it's damn near criminal to subject such modern classics to winter road conditions. Also, unmodified Corrados are almost extinct, and buying somebody else's project is a sure way to have everything go wrong.

Have you considered a Volvo 850 or early V70? (I know that I harp on about them a lot)? Sure, they're not the most inspiring things to look at, but they drive nicely, they're FWD (with ABS as standard, and traction control on later models), fairly reliable (save for a few minor weaknesses that make themselves known long before they cause problems), and the Turbo and R models are by no means short on power.

Remember how much I ranted against your original plan to take out a loan for an old 944? My opinion of how dumb this plan is uses the original plan as a unit of measurement. This plan is approximately 6 "used 944 loans" in terms of sheer stupidity to do. It will never work when you need or want it to and you will spend more time and money trying to keep it on the road than your 944.

Look, I'm sorry about your situation, but I simply cannot help but ask these questions; I find them both entertaining and informative, I learn something new every time I ask. And every time I do, It helps me become a better car enthusiast; if I didn't ask anything, even on the same repetitive subject, I would learn nothing. To me, Oppo is that one community in which I'm allowed to ask those questions freely without any sort of abuse, hate or insults. It's simply better than any forum out there, because it's so diverse; all these different cars and different people, it's what makes Oppo.

K-Roll, first off, I do like that you ask about our opinions, since that is what this site is for! We love cars, and decisions on what to buy is important to us.

I want to say that I don't care if you post 11 million times of not being able to decide. We are here to help! And, my decision is in concordance to that of other people. They say VR6s are solid engines, but its too much maintenance and care for it to be a successful winter beater.

Here is my choices that fit your criteria, I know and respect that you don't like trucks:

1. Any sort of Subaru. Yes, they wont be exciting, and you have to find an unmodded one, but I guess they will be plenty capable.

2. E30 3 series? No, no AWD, but with winter tires and light weight, it should be decent.

3. Honda Element Manual. Why? because utility, and reliability.

4. Scion XB? Why? Because BOX

5. Mazda Protege. Its kind of utilitarian, AND fun.

6. Lexus ES300 Manual. Why? Because rare and you can beat it!

These are some on top of my head, but I can investigate more into your needs! Always a pleasure to help out!

1. Too big(I hate big cars); I'm not even comfortable or confident driving a van!

Ranger or S10 is smaller than a full sized car. The wheelbase on a regular cab short bed Ranger is 111.5" . The 2015 Impala is 111.7". 2015 Taurus is 112.9". There are cars on the road that are larger than a Mini truck.

2. Too high(I hate sitting tall in vehicles, for the same reasons above)

It's safer. Better view of the road. I love the view from an International WorkStar dump truck I drive.

3. I don't feel confident driving a truck.

Why?

4. I have no space at my house for a truck in the driveway.

See answer #1

5. I have no use for a truck and it's bed.

You and 90% of Americans. A fiberglass tonneau cover makes your bed into a trunk basically.

6. It's overall useless to me in the non winter season.

They can still get from point A to B in the summer.

7. If the 944 is down for any reason in the spring, summer or fall, I do not want to drive a truck for whatever period of time it is down.

Beats walking and public transport.

8. I hate trucks.

I'm sorry.

9. Parking spaces are too damn small where I'd have to park.

I've parked in tons of downtown parking garages in my SuperCab Ranger.

10. They're not appealing to me in any way.

See answer #8

11. I think I'd be more likely to kill myself in a truck than in anything else!

B.S. I'd venture to say a truck is safer than most cars.
